Hello, readers! I’m thrilled to welcome you to my author blog, where I’ll be sharing insights into my journey as a pediatrician, a mother, and now, an author of children’s literature. My name is Dr. Melissa Bent, and I’m on a mission to inspire and empower young minds through my debut book, “ABCs of Women in Medicine.”

As a black pediatrician mother, I’ve been deeply passionate about two things: providing quality healthcare to children and advocating for diversity and representation in all aspects of life, especially in the field of medicine. It’s no secret that our world is beautifully diverse, yet the medical profession often falls short in reflecting this diversity.

In the United States, less than 40% of doctors are women, and shockingly, less than 3% are black women like myself. These statistics not only highlight the disparities within medicine but also underscore the urgent need for more inclusive narratives that celebrate the contributions of women, particularly those from underrepresented backgrounds.

With “ABCs of Women in Medicine,” I aim to do just that. Through the pages of this book, I want to introduce young readers to a diverse array of female doctors, each with her own unique story, specialty, and cultural background. From pediatricians to surgeons, from neurologists to hematologists, every letter of the alphabet will showcase a different woman making her mark in the world of medicine.

But this book is more than just an alphabet primer. It’s a celebration of diversity, visibility, and possibility. It’s a reminder to every child, regardless of their gender, race, ability, or background, that they too can aspire to greatness in any field they choose.
